"Damn this sun, anyway." She muttered to herself, trying not to get hit by a passing truck.
She put down her bags, put her hands in her pocket and stopped. They weren't there. Pursing her lips, she tried the other pocket, expecting their familar lump and jangle. But nothing.
It was then that she realized she didn't have her keys.
No, I wouldn't.. she thought to herself.. no! I couldn't....
She looked around at the ground beneath her, as though the keys would magically appear, popping up from the asphalt like an offering to the gods. She went through her steps as she got out of the car.. put up sun shield, check... put stereo face in glove compartment,check.. put cds under seat..check... put keys on passenger seat..chec..oh shit.
Running around to the other side of the car she looks down and there they are, winking at her in the sun, smiling like a jewel in the middle of hot sand. Almost close enough to touch, but no cigar.
Cursing, she kicks the door and then howls and whimpers in pain. A man passing by squints at her. A child somewhere screams. She curses and goes to get her bags and go back up to the store, to use the phone, to call for an extra set of keys....
It's when she's sitting in the shade and waiting for her father to bring her the keys that she realizes the back door to the hatchback of her car is unlocked.
Running back out to her car she confirms that she is the biggest idiot allowed to own a car. Now she is stuck- should she not mention the fact that her dad had to drive all this way for nothing or should she suck it up and admit- ha ha.. guess, what? I could get in all the time! hah hah..
